The original route

The journey of wine began in the 12th century in Byzantine Monemvasia and continued in Venetian-occupied Crete until the middle of the 17th century, while traveling to all markets of the East and West. It was exported to all the ports of the Mediterranean and the Black Sea, approaching even the most demanding markets in Europe. Having a high price, justified by its respective quality, but also its glamor, it was loved and consumed in the best homes of the rich, nobles and even kings, and managed to gain a huge reputation, like no other wine in the Middle Ages and Renaissance.

Over the years, the fall of Byzantium and the occupation of Monemvasia by the Turks resulted in the destruction of the vineyards and the extinction of the Malvasia wine. However, the Venetians, by transporting Malvasia varieties to the Mediterranean and Europe, contributed to the spread of cultivation from Croatia and Italy to Spain, Portugal and the Canary Islands.

In modern times, therefore, in honor of that sweet wine, almost the entire civilized wine world produces a “local” Malvasia (Malvasia) from indigenous raw materials, which imitates and copies, from all the texts that have survived and speak of it, the cultivation method, vinification techniques, varieties, and even the way of consuming the original Malvasia.

In Europe, they used the name Malvasia for various vine varieties that still exist today, as well as similar wines, often very different from the original Monemvasio wine. This fact triggered the production of Malvasia in every region of Europe, building its own myth of variety and wine, with many disagreements over the paternity of the variety, its authenticity, and even the scientific documentation.
