The European family of Malvasia is very broad and in almost all wine-producing countries we can identify vines that bear this name, even though we know that the same is often used improperly in defining other varieties. It is both difficult and fascinating at the same time to understand the intricate world od Malvasia. Inevitably for this reason every wine named Malvasia belongs to the ineffable myth that has accompanied it for centuries. Considering that in Italy alone there are nineteen white and red berried Malvasia cultivars admitted by the National Register of Varieties, we can guess the extraordinary group of varieties, including heterogeneous genotypes which, although they have a different genesis, refer to the same name. We will discuss below with the main types cultivated in our peninsula and some other types that are historically located in different territories as protagonists.
